How this data was built

Source: NHTSA's public complaint database, retrieved October 15, 2026, for every model and model year listed in Subaru's head unit warranty extension (TSB 15-322-25R). Each candidate complaint was read individually and kept only if the owner describes an actual failure of the head unit, touchscreen, or phone connection (CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, Bluetooth), including failures that also take down the backup camera, climate controls, or driver-assist features shown on that screen. Passing mentions of the radio (for example in dead-battery reports), telematics/SOS subscription issues, and unrelated problems were excluded.

"Safety impact" means the owner reported distraction, lost navigation while driving, or losing the backup camera, climate controls, or driver-assist features. NHTSA complaints are unverified owner reports, and most owners never file one, so these counts are a floor, not a total.
